In honor of our Fallen Eagle, Zachary M. Capra, the faculty, staff and students of Embry-Riddle have established the Zachary M. Capra Memorial Scholarship to pay tribute to his indomitable spirit, his legacy of selfless service and his love of flight.
The beloved son of Patsy and John Capra of Thornton, Colorado, Zach was living his dream when a tragic aircraft accident took his life on Wednesday morning, April 4. He was on course to earn his commercial license and graduate this summer with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics, continuing on his path of becoming a commercial airline pilot.
Zach came to Embry-Riddle following his service to the Navy (2012-2016) as an aviation boatswain’s mate on the USS Harry S. Truman. He was a member of Embry-Riddle’s Student Veterans Organization and an inspiration to cadets and fellow aspiring pilots everywhere. He was someone who, according to a friend, “smiled often and never hesitated to provide encouragement to others.”
Zach’s own words are a testament to his invincible spirit and his generous encouragement of others:
“Follow your hopes and dreams. Don’t let anyone keep you from doing what you have been determined to accomplish. There might be difficult times when you could think about giving up, but just keep pushing and reach your set goals.”
If you’d like to contribute to Zach’s legacy and ensure that generations of aviators like him are able to pursue their dreams, make a gift to the Zachary M. Capra fund today.
