The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide College of Aeronautics celebrated the naming of a plane by its faculty Wednesday at the Daytona Beach Campus’ Samuel M. Goldman Maintenance Hangar.

The donation to name the plane was a way that Worldwide faculty could show their support for the university and its students as a whole, regardless of campus, said Kenneth L. Witcher, dean of the College of Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide.

“It is a way for us to support the overall larger student population at Embry-Riddle,” he said. “We’re all on the same team here.”

Worldwide College of Aeronautics faculty members donated $2,500 to name the plane and many professors, who were in Daytona Beach for their annual meeting, stopped by to see the plane and posed for a photo. The Worldwide College of Aeronautics has 42 full-time faculty members and 750 adjunct professors.

“My donation is in honor of my grandmother, Dorothy Hall, who was a school teacher and a pilot,” said Sonya McMullen, assistant professor at the Worldwide College of Aeronautics. “I’d like to think she’d be proud that her granddaughter is a full-time faculty member at Embry-Riddle.”

By making the gift, Worldwide faculty joined Embry-Riddle’s Name A Plane Campaign, which is raising funds for the Daytona Beach and Prescott Campuses’ flight programs.

The campaign gives donors an opportunity to name a Cessna 172 for $2,500 or a Diamond Twinstar for $5,000 for a two-year period. Donors may choose to name the plane after themselves, in honor or in memory of another person or in the name of a company or organization.

Funds can be designated to support any combination of the following funds:
Daytona Beach Flight Department
Prescott Flight Department
Daytona Beach Women's Air Race Classic Team
Prescott Women’s Air Race Classic Team
Daytona Flight Team
Prescott Golden Eagles Flight Team
